Bathroom Organisation

I haven't managed to get any organising done lately since I have been preparing for Halloween, and with Christmas coming up in the next few weeks, I had better get a move on otherwise my house will be in an even more disorganised state once the present buying and wrapping are under way. So I decided to start with my bathroom as we (read me) have so many toiletries and at the moment, are just thrown randomly into the cupboard and drawer. A couple of months ago we went down to Ikea in Edinburgh where I bought these as I thought they would come in handy for when I was organising the bathroom.

First of all I cleared out the small cupboard that is behind the wall of our shower. It has 4 small shelves and quite deep and it's a nightmare looking for something as everything is all higgledy-piggledy. As things had just been shoved into the cupboard I had no idea what was in there so there were a few duplicates of things such as toothpaste, soap, etc. I bought these and I allocated each basket a purpose and filled them accordingly.

Basket one has the spares such as toothpaste, soap, cotton wool, cotton buds, etc.

Basket two has some of my toiletries in it (I used some of Mr M's basket as well, as being a girl I obviously have more than him :) )

Basket 3 has Mr M's toiletries (and some of mine)

Basket 4 is where I put in the cleaning products that I use to clean the bathroom with. This saves me going up and down the stairs to get the things I need, plus everything is in the one place.

There is a drawer under our bathroom sink, as you can see from the photo it is a funny shape and not a normal designed drawer as it has space for the waste pipe when the drawer is shut. With the containers that I bought from IKEA, the 3 smaller ones were used to store my cotton wool pads, cotton buds and my hair accessories to tie my hair up when I'm bathing or using a face mask. The rest of the space was used to store my shampoo, conditioner, cleanser, etc and Mr M's products. I have just noticed that he has a lot more aftershave than I have perfume......this will have to be rectified ;)!!

There is space under the drawer of the sink unit where I have put a basket and filled it with the spare toilet rolls so that it is accessible when a roll has finished.

Is your bathroom organised? How do you organise yours? I'd love to know :).

Meal Planning Monday

Afternoon all! Hope you had a good weekend and some of you aren't too badly affected by any storms in your area. Luckily it doesn't seem to have come up this far. Anyway, I have been so busy with my Halloween posts and my next blog post, that Monday has somehow managed to sneak up on me and I have realised at 16.15 that I have not done a meal plan for this week and so now I am hurriedly typing up this post at my work......hopefully I don't get caught!

As it is Halloween on Thursday I will be having something quick as we get loads of Trick or Treaters round, so I will have my meal finished before they come to the door (6pm seems to be when they start). Friday is when my Brother in Law and his Partner will be coming round for Halloween snacks so will be putting on some party food for that. Normally I go to my Mum's on a Wednesday but someone in my work is leaving and mving down to Peterborough, so we are going out for a meal instead. That only leaves tonight, tomorrow and the weekend to sort out So my meal plan for this week is:

Monday
Meatballs & Pasta with Bruschetta

Tuesday
Sausages and Mash

Wednesday
Out!!

Thursday
Undecided as yet

Friday
Pumpkin shaped pizzas, Hot Dog Mummies, BBQ Ribs and other Halloween party food that I will make

Saturday
Takeaway

Sunday
Chicken, roast potatoes & veg.

Sorry for the hasty post, looking forward to seeing what everyone else is having this week.

Halloween House Tour

As you know from my previous posts I love Halloween and love decorating the house for it. I wish we celebrated Halloween over here like they do in America as they go all out for it with their front gardens all decorated with displays, as well as the inside of their homes. I normally just decorate the interior of our house but in my 40 Things Before 40 post, one of the things I wanted to do was decorate outside for a Holiday or an occasion so if I have enough time I will do that also. Apologies in advance for this photo heavy post :).

Here are pictures of the interior of my Halloween home:

Halloween Door Stop

In our hall, I gave the cat door stop a fancy dress outfit for Halloween.  She is wearing a Witches' hat with orange and black glitter tulle and a small broomstick.

Witch Decoration

On top of the cupboard in our hall, there is a Witch with a candy corn Welcome sign, a Gisela Graham Ghoulish Greetings sign and a Pumpkin Happy Halloween pick in with a plant.

In our Living room, I have quite a few Yankee Candle Halloween candle Holders and Halloween Cherished Teddies ornaments. Also there is my Halloween Lantern that I made.

I have a candy dish filled with sweets and also a silver glittered spider trying to get into it on our coffee table. This has had to be refilled a number of times due to Mr M's sweet tooth!!

On our media cabinet, I have my Yankee Candle Boney Bunch Old Lady tealight holder, Yankee Candle Monster tealight holder and a Cherished Teddy called Rex.

At either side of my television, I have two Yankee Candle Monster tealight holders (Frankenstein pulling a Pumpkin and a Witch).

I have my Yankee Candle Jack O'Lantern Tree, Yankee Candle Ghost Hurricane and Cherished Teddies; Icabod, Sullivan, Honey and Cassandra on my sideboard. The mirror above it has a Gisela Graham bat and spider webs.

In my Kitchen, I have an orange glittered Trick or Treat sign and a Yankee Candle Jack O'Lantern tealight holder on the windowsill. On my dining table I have an Autumnal floral display that I made, it's a clear vase stuffed with black glittery tulle, with faux pheasant feathers, Autumn leaves picks and a Ghost coming out of a pumpkin pick. I also have a Halloween table runner.

My oven has two Halloween dish towels that I bought online from America and also a Haunted house oven glove.

Upstairs in my bathroom I have got three tealight holders, these were bought from Poundland in the Summer, they had loads of different colours but I thought the Orange ones looked like pumpkins so would come in handy for Halloween. Also my Halloween soap dispenser is by the sink.

On the windowsill at the top of the stairs, I have a glittered Boo sign, a gold glittered spider and a Jack O'Lantern tealight holder.

I have a Happy Halloween sign on one of the bedroom doors.

So that is the end of my Halloween House Tour, if you have decorated your home I'd love to see some pics.

Happy Halloween!

Meal Planning Monday

It's Monday again, I hope you all had a good weekend. Weather was pretty crap this weekend so we cleared out our spare room as it became a dumping ground in the couple of years we lived here. We are hoping to decorate that room in the next few weeks, so I will be doing a post on the makeover  sometime in the future.

40 Things Before 40

It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago and in two years time I will scarily be 40....eek! I don't feel that I am so close to middle age as I feel exactly like I did when I was 18 (where does the time go?!) There are so many things that I want to do, so I decided to make a list of 40 things to do before 40. Some people might call it a Bucket List but I am hoping that there is a good few years left in me yet and I want to do a lot more than what's on this list, so I will eventually get round to having a bucket list at some point.  As I have a short period of time and limited funds to complete this list, anything too expensive won't be on it. So my 40 things before 40 list is below:

1. Cook a curry from scratch as this is something I have never done before and I love curries.
2. Watch 20 films that I have never watched before.
3. Read 20 books. I used to read a lot of books when I was younger but somehow stopped over the years. If you know of any good books then let me know.
4. Visit New York
5. Learn a new language. Am thinking on Spanish.
6. Start a Pension. I did start one in my early 20's but have frozen it for about 14 years so really must start this up again.
7. Have a Hot Stone Massage.
8. See the Northern Lights.
9. Run 5K.
10. Send a message in a bottle.
11. Afternoon tea in a posh hotel.
12. Volunteer at an Animal Sanctuary.
13. Go on the Jacobite Train (the Harry Potter scene with the train crossing the bridge).
14. Own a vintage tea set.
15. Learn to sew.
16. Meet someone famous.
17. See a West End show.
18. Go to a Christmas Eve Carol Service.
19. Host a dinner party.
20. Have a spa day.
21. Give blood.
22. Meet up with my Cousins.
23. Raise money for charity.
24. Try Sushi.
25. Work my way through a Cocktail list.
26. Start a Youtube Channel.
27. Watch all the Harry Potter films back to back.
28. Reach 500 Blog Followers.
29. Be a Tourist in my own City.
30. Win something, lottery, a competition, anything!
31. Have a big party.
32. Decorate the front garden for a Holiday or an occasion.
33. Learn to eat with Chopsticks.
34. Maintain my ideal weight.
35. Research my Family Tree.
36. Bake a cake/cookies for the people in my work.
37. Reach 500 Twitter followers.
38. Cook Christmas dinner.
39. Go to Nick Nairn's Cook School
40. Have a child (hopefully we will be lucky enough)

Do you have a list that you want to do things by a certain age or a bucket list? I'd love to hear them.

Halloween Soap Dispenser

I had my eye on a Bath and Bodyworks' Jack O' Lantern soap dispenser on eBay but with shipping from America on top of the price of the dispenser meant it was over £25! Luckily someone in my work was going to America on holiday to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Palm Springs and Los Angeles (alright for some) so I asked him if he would be able to get me one while he was away. Unfortunately he was unable to get me one :( as they only had Pumpkins (for fall) rather than the Jack O' Lanterns. So I thought that I could maybe make my own one. It's obviously not as nice as the Bath and Bodyworks' one but it will do until I can eventually get one.

What you need

Orange Coloured Soap Dispenser
Baby Oil
Black Electrical Tape
Ribbon

How to make

Remove the label from the bottle.  If there is any sticky residue, remove by rubbing baby oil with kitchen paper towel.
Cut eyes, nose and a mouth from the electrical tape and stick on to the soap dispenser.
Tie a ribbon around the neck of the bottle.

You could make a ghost soap dispenser using the same method with a white soap.

Halloween Haul

I was in town at the weekend and I ended up buying more Halloween things.  It's not like I don't have enough as I do but I just can't seem to help myself.  I see something I like and somehow I end up at the till paying for it! At this rate I am going to have to buy more storage containers.

Anyhoo, if you want to have a wee look at what I bought here are a few pics of my haul.

Primark Halloween Jumper
Primark Ghost Jumper £14.00
The photo doesn't do the jumper any justice as there are some sparkly sequins in the ghost that the camera did not pick up.  I thought that this would be good to wear in the daytime on Halloween as dressed up in fancy dress while I go about my day to day business might attract some very strange looks :)

Lidl Halloween Tricolore Pasta 99p
John Lewis Pumpkin Marshmallows £4.00
In Lidls, I came across a bag of Halloween pasta shapes that include Jack O' Lanterns, spiders, bats, etc and I thought that I could make a Halloween Pasta Bake for dinner one night and also for a Pasta Salad for our get together on the 1st November.  With the marshmallows, I bought them without thinking what to use them for as I just thought they were cute. I have a black icing pen that I might draw Jack O' Lantern faces on them or I might just put them into my hot chocolate.

Aldi Halloween Pails 99p each
Aldi Silicon Ice Trays £1.99 each

In Aldi's I picked up 3 cute little Halloween pails, a Jack O' Lantern, a spider and and a spotted one with Happy Halloween on it. Not sure what I will use these for yet but I am sure I will find some use for them. Also there were silicon ice trays, I bought the bats and ghosts but there were pumpkin ones too. As they are silicon you could probably use them to make mini cakes too.

Lush Pumkin Bubble Bar £2.75

And finally, my treat for Halloween night is this little fella, a Lush Pumkin Bubble Bar (yes Pumkin without a P it's not a spelling error). Like other Lush products it smells lovely and I am looking forward to having a long soak in the bath once all the Trick or Treaters have gone :)

Have you bought anything for Halloween? I love seeing what other people buy for Halloween.

Meal Planning Monday

After my absence last week due to staying at the Parents, I am back and raring to go with my meal plan. I have to say I was glad to get back home to my own house and bed! I even went to Lush before going home to buy some nice bath stuff as my Parents only have a shower and I missed not having a relaxing bath. As I was unsure what Mr M ate in the house last week I did not buy a lot of food this week before coming back home so am using up what we already have in.

So this week's plan is:

Monday
Toad in the Hole

Tuesday
Chicken stuffed with Black Pudding & Pepper sauce, potatoes & veg

Wednesday
My Mum's

Thursday
Meatballs and Pasta

Friday
Pizza

Saturday
Takeaway

What are you having this week?

Halloween Lantern - Home Decor

With Halloween just over three weeks away, I have already started making the decorations for the home.  Last week I made the Boo Wall Hanging and today I made my Halloween lantern.  This lantern normally sits outside with a slightly smaller one and with Summer now over I thought I would use it indoors for over the Winter.

Sad looking lanterns

I cleaned the lantern up as there were lots of leaf debris, dust, etc and put in a new candle. I then added a few Autumn fabric leaves, pine cones and a couple of mini dried pumpkins inside the lantern. I attached a double bow that my friend made me (there are you tube tutorials on this but I still couldn't do it!). It was made using 5 metres of Orange Tartan wired ribbon and 5 metres of Black glitter mesh ribbon. I then added in a Gisela Graham glitter and feathered crow and a ghost coming out of a pumpkin. Everything apart from the ribbon was what I already had in the house.

Obviously I'm not going to light the candle but I think that it livens up the look of the sad lantern that would have just been left outside. It's inspired me to make another one for Christmas! :)

Warm Spiced Apple Drink Recipe

Brrrrrrrr!! The days are definitely getting shorter with it getting dark before 7pm and the weather is now getting a lot cooler as well as turning wet and windy, so here is a drink that will warm you up on these cold Autumnal nights. It would also be suitable at Christmas time for a warm festive drink that the drivers and non-alcohol drinkers will love while those who can drink are sipping their mulled wine.

You only need a few ingredients for this warm, spicy drink recipe and it is so easy to make too.

You will need:

1 Litre Apple Juice
1 Cinnamon Stick
6 Whole Cloves
Pinch of Allspice
1 Tablespoon Stem Ginger in Syrup (plus 1 tablespoon of the syrup)

What to do:

Put all the ingredients in a medium saucepan and place over a high heat. Bring the juice to a gentle simmer, turn the heat down to low and leave for 20 minutes for the spices to infuse.

Drain the liquid to remove the cinnamon stick and cloves.  Using a ladle, fill up your mugs or heat-proof cups, drink and enjoy!

Makes enough for 4 Mugs.

I've Been Nominated For A Versatile Blogger Award

Hello

After trailing around the shops on Monday looking for things to spend my birthday money on - I bought two jumpers and a Lush Pumkin Bath Bar (why is it when you have no money the shops are full of lovely things to buy and then when you have money to spend there seems to be nothing that you want) my legs were aching.  I decided to rest my weary legs by lying on the sofa, eating a piece of birthday cake and checking Twitter when I saw that the lovely Toni from Oh Hey Tone had nominated me for The Versatile Blogger Award!

This is a fantastic award given to bloggers who you feel really have covered some unique topics and have high quality posts.  So thanks so much Toni :)!

So the rules of this award are…
  • Display the award on your blog
  • Mention/link the lovely people who nominated you
  • Nominate another 15 blogs/bloggers who you feel should be given this award
  • Inform them you have nominated them
  • Write 7 facts about yourself
I actually found it quite difficult to think of seven facts but I got there in the end. Seven facts about me are:

I have every Now That's What I Call Music CD from Now 10 to the current one.
Although I am no longer working in practice I am a qualified Veterinary Nurse.
I have always wanted to go to New York at Christmas time so I can see the shops all done up.  Americans do Halloween and Christmas far better than us Brits!
I love Horror films but not the gory kind.
I drive a convertible.
I don't "do" digital, I buy all my music on CDs instead of downloads.
Watching the film Babe turned me vegetarian for over 5 years. The thought of eating a Babe or a Ferdinand was just too much :(.

My nominees are:

Dolly Dowsie
Beauty and More by Pilar
Mwah Makeup
Life is Peachy
Diamonds & Daisy-Chains
Aspiring Joy
At Home with Mrs MTavia's Beadiful Life
Northumberland Mam
The eagle-eyed among you will perhaps notice that I have only nominated 10 instead of the 15 but I havent came across 15 blogs as yet. This is something that I am working on though. Send me a link of your blog as I would love to read them. :)
